The solid fat content (SFC) is an important parameter both for quality control and for the development of products for the food industry, especially for the chocolate, margarine, bakery, fried and biscuit industries.

Oil is present in our lives in many products we consume (breads, cookies, margarine, ice cream, lipsticks, etc.).

The palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.), Is an oilseed, its oil being the most consumed in the world.

Spin Finish analysis in the manufacture of textile yarns is essential to process control and quality of the final product.

Solid Fat Content (SFC)

SFC by nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr) has replaced the legacy application of dilatometry due to ease of operation, high accuracy and high repeatability, and an accepted method according to international standards such as ISO and AOCS.

The specfit equipment, operates in accordance with the following standards AOCS Cd 16b-93, ISO 8292-1 and IUPAC 2.150 and is proven equivalent to other nmr instruments. (see below)

With the following benefits.

  • Accuracy and repeatability
  • Easy and robust calibration
  • Speed
  • Non-destructive
  • Operator independence
  • No sample preparation chemistry
  • Friendly software
  • Compatible with LIMS, automation and corporate IT systems.

specfit is guaranteed to provide equivalent SFC measurements across the supply chain.

Required Equipment

specfit HR27 with SFC software + 10 mm probe

Additional equipment:

  • 10 mm disposable sample tubes
  • Calibration standards provided with every specfit for SFC.
  • Constant temperature baths for sample tempering (see our LAIX page)
  • Timers/stopwatches (for systems without automation).

Oil/Moisture Content in Seed

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Technology in the time domain (NMR – DT) has been replacing the dilatometry, for its ease of operation, high accuracy and high repeatability, besides is accepted as official method according to international standards such as ISO and AOCS.

The SpecFIT equipment, manufactured in Brazil, uses the NMR-DT technique to determine the solid fat content in oils and fats in accordance with the following standards AOCS Cd 16b-93, ISO 8292-1 and IUPAC 2.150.

More Features:

Required Equipment

Besides SpecFIT equipment connected to a computer with the proper software, you need:

  • Test tubes with an outer diameter of (10 ±
  • 0.25) mm and a wall thickness of (0.9 ± 0.25)
  • mm.
  • Standard FIT sample tubes for calibration, with approximate values of 0, 30 and 70% SFC.
  • Temperature   control   equipment   for   test tubes, whether wet or dry.
  • Dedicated oven or bath for initial melting of samples.
  • Stopwatches (in the case of systems without automation).

Oil/Moisture Content in Palm Processing

The palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.), is an oilseed, its oil being the most consumed in the world.

Palm oil is present in our lives in many products we consume (breads, cookies, margarine, ice cream, lipsticks, etc.).

Palm oil producing companies are constantly modernizing and implementing actions and technologies to increase the efficiency of their processes and SpecFIT, which uses magnetic resonance technology, is in line with this trend because it performs rapid measurements with high precision , non-destructive and with great ease of operation.

Advantages

The extraction of this fruit is divided into several stages, which need process control, which is fundamental for production, thus allowing loss control and the analysis of oil content in the fruit, which generate improvements in oilseed yield and quality in the final product.

SpecFIT is a pulsed NMR spectrometer. Magnetic resonance imaging is one of the most accurate methods for measuring oil quantity, as it analyzes the sample at the nuclear level, detecting from 0.1g of oil in the sample. In addition, it allows analysis several times a day in a fast way, monitoring the potential loss points in the process.

Required Equipment

Besides the SpecFIT hardware and a PC with the SpecFIT accompanying software, you will need:

  • Glass test tubes with 40mm outside diameter (sample holder).

  • Crude palm oil for calibration.

  • Crude palm kernel oil for calibration.

  • Semi-analytical balance (minimum accuracy of 0.01g). Kiln or microwave for drying samples.

  • Cotton.

  • Samples with known oil content values.

  • 1 Micropipette with 1ml volume and disposable tips or Pasteur pipette.

Finish on Fiber

Spin Finish analysis in the manufacture of textile yarns is essential to process control and quality of the final product.

Spin finish is one of the names of liquid coatings applied at a variety of stages in the manufacturing process to control a number of properties including the coefficient of surface friction and electrostatic charge while producing synthetic fibres like polyester, polypropylene, polyamide, acrylic, amongst others.

It is also important that fabric and derivative manufacturers measure spin finish when receiving the raw material, as this influences the quality of the final product in its manufacture.

SpecFIT uses nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology to measure the amount of coating oil finish in a fiber or fabric sample. In essence we measure the amount of hydrogen nuclei relative to the coating oil finish in a sample. That makes the NMR a reliable technique with simple steps to follow.

Required Equipment

In addition to the SpecFIT equipment connected to a computer with the appropriate software, the following are required:

18 mm outer diameter test tubes.

A set of calibration samples. Minimum of three, recommended nine.

Temperature maintenance equipment for the tubes, at 40º C / 104º F is desirable to achieve best accuracy of results.
